Supporters help mental health charity smash through its distance target for its flagship 5k Trip to the Moon fundraiser
Supporters of mental health charity, Leicestershire Action for Mental Health Project (Lamp), have helped to smash the 384,400km distance target in the organisation’s Lamp 5k Trip to the Moon flagship fundraiser.
Lamp’s 5k campaign, which is now in its second year, promotes the benefits of physical exercise on our mental health. This year’s event took off from 9-15 May 2022, as part of Mental Health Awareness Week. It encouraged people to complete a 5km (or more) to collectively reach 384,400km – the distance from the Earth to the moon – and raise money for each kilometre covered, aiming for a total of £38,440.
Here are the figures on the distances tracked by participants in Lamp’s Strava 5km club, featured according to each week starting from 9 May onwards, as well as those who updated their miles manually through the WellGiving platform.

This year’s Lamp 5k challenge will culminate in a grand celebration on 20 July at the National Space Centre from 5.30-8pm, to mark the anniversary of the moon landing as well as to officially close the Trip to the Moon fundraiser.
Lamp is extending a warm welcome for everyone to attend the celebration. The event is free to attend but to help achieve its fundraising goal, the charity is asking for a suggested donation of £20 per head for adults and £2 for each child during registration. This will include:
- Exclusive out of hours entry to the National Space Centre
- An educational talk on the moon landing
- A private showing of CAPCOM GO! The Apollo Story in the 192-seater planetarium
- Fun-filled activities for the family
- Live music
- A host of stalls to browse through
Visitors will be treated to a welcome drink upon arrival and donations from the event will go towards supporting Lamp’s work in providing mental health advocacy services for the community. Guests can register their attendance for Lamp’s 5k Trip to the Moon celebration here, while details of the event can be found here.
Richard Kotulecki, Lamp’s CEO said:
“We’re excited about our celebration on 20 July which will bring our 5k fundraiser to a close. The event is an important way for us to express our thanks to our partners, supporters, peers and staff, along with members of the community including the many families and individuals, who completed various 5km activities to make the Lamp 5k challenge a success. On 20 June we exceeded our distance target by achieving a total of 385,341km, but we still need to achieve our fundraising target of £38,440. We warmly welcome donations to our cause which will help us to ensure that we are able to support our community with our mental health advocacy services.”
